What TV Shows Are You Watching At The Moment?

TV shows to watch

So, what TV shows are you watching at the moment? Are you slogging through a long series with endless seasons? Or are you in between shows and looking for something new and inspiring to watch?

I’m not exactly sure why my husband and I have started watching so much TV again, but I’m going to blame all the brilliant programming on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Lightbox! We’ve got into a habit of settling down to watch a couple of programmes most nights after dinner now. And I can’t even remember what we used to do before we were doing this!

Not that I’m complaining because I’m loving the majority of the programmes we’ve been watching. Most of them have been amazing. And to cut down on any poor programme choices, we tend to watch shows that have been recommended to us by family, friends and kind people on the internet. So I thought I’d be one of those kind people now and list a few of my recommendations for you here.

Some Older TV Shows That We Loved

If you haven’t watched these, I’d highly recommend getting onto that ASAP.

How to Get Away with Murder This great American drama series follows the life of Annalise Keating, a law professor, played by Viola Davis at the time that she, and 5 of her students, find themselves caught up in murder. Viola Davis is extraordinary in this.

The Good Wife What a great series! It was brilliant to watch an intelligent woman defense attorney (Julianna Margulies) ‘take charge of her destiny’. Courtroom drama at its best.

Prime Suspect Helen Mirren plays Detective Chief Inspector, Jane Tennison in this old British series. The show ran from 1991 until 2006 when Season 7 finished. I found it fascinating to watch how Jane Tennison navigated her way through the male-dominated Metropolitan Police – especially as we were experiencing the start of the Me Too movement when we were watching this show. Loved this one.

The West Wing An oldie, but a goodie. I learnt so much about American politics from this one. We were truly sad when this series finished.

Schitt’s Creek I must admit, this one started off slowly. But give it a chance because by the end of Season 5 you will be utterly hooked! I was very pleased to hear that Season 6 is coming out soon – that’s definitely on our list to finish watching.

Blacklist We have continued to enjoy this programme with each passing week (yes, we have to wait!). Highly recommend the suspense that every programme offers. The last few episodes have been nailbiting as we waited to see whether James Spader’s character, Raymond Reddington, survived death row.

Newer TV Shows We Love

Killing Eve is a British TV series featuring Sandra Oh playing an MI5 officer who is tracking down a psychopathic assassin. Brilliantly clever, funny and well-acted, we can’t wait for the next season to come out. Check out THIS STORY about the assassin actor.

Jack Ryan is an American action political thriller starring cute actor, John Krasinski as Jack Ryan. The programme follows Jack Ryan, a CIA analyst who finds himself out in the field owing to his brilliant mind. Loved this one.

Fleabag is another British series we love. This one is a comedy-drama about a young woman who finds herself at a slightly depressing time of her life. There is definitely an underlying sadness about this show, but the writing and acting are wonderful and we are very keen to see Season 2.

The Night Manager Based on John le Carre’s novel of the same name, this show follows the antics of a former British soldier. This show kept us transfixed and we’re so looking forward to Season 2.

Patriot Oh my, this one is fantastically off-the-wall. We loved it. It can be slightly depressing at times, but you grow to adore the characters and the general vibe with each new programme. Wacky, novel and we’re hanging for the next season.

Bodyguard Ooh, the actor in this series is quite lovely. He plays a war veteran who now works as a police sergeant for the London Metropolitan Police. The punchiness of this one will blow you away. Unexpected twists and turns! Waiting to see whether there will be a second season and desperately hoping there will be.

The Kominsky Method is an American comedy series starring Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin. We loved the humour and are also looking forward to Season 2.

Other TV Shows Worth a Look-In

Manifest We recently finished this one and wow, it was an interesting concept. After a plane experiences bad turbulence, it lands, and the passengers and crew discover that 5 years have passed since their take-off, not the expected few hours that their flight was initially meant to be. The plane had gone missing according to everyone else on earth, so when they landed, they had to deal with the fact that those who weren’t on the plane had aged 5 years and some had moved on with their lives without them. One really crazy occurrence was that a pair of twins were separated. One was on the flight and when he returned, his sister was 5 years older than him! While this series had great promise and we did finish Season 1, we found the acting very average and the storyline quite thin.

Forever This show is about a couple who live a very average and predictable life, but then things get shaken up and take a turn for the crazy and thought-provoking. I love Maya Rudolph (of Saturday Night Live fame) in this. Worth a watch.

The Man in the High Castle This show is about what would have happened if Germany and Japan had won World War 2. This dystopian alternative world shows the horrors that ensue and kept us transfixed throughout the 3 seasons. Season 4 is coming.

Mr Mercedes is an American crime drama based on a trilogy by Stephen King. Brendan Gleeson plays retired Detective Bill Hodges who continues to look into an unsolved case of “Mr Mercedes”. He is so good.

Covert Affairs In this, CIA trainee, Annie Walker, is fast-tracked to field operative because of her exceptional linguistic skills and intuition. With the help of a blind military intelligence agent, she finds herself dodging many dangerous situations all over the world. We loved watching this series.

The Enemy Within This is another show about a CIA field operative. We enjoyed this TV show starring Jennifer Carpenter (who played Dexter’s sister in the show, Dexter) and are waiting to see whether Season 2 comes out.

Tin Star Tim Roth stars in this British-Canadian crime drama. Jim Worth (Roth) plays a former Metropolitan Police officer who becomes the chief of police in a Canadian town in the Rocky Mountains to escape his violent past. Things don’t go as planned, of course. Recommend.

Can you spot a definite pattern here? We obviously love the crime/police/CIA/Metropolitan Police genre it seems!? How about you?
