Every Summer After – Carley Fortune
A few chapters in, I thought this book was a bit too YA, but as I continued, I started enjoying it more and more. And I’m so glad that I persevered because the ending and overall sentiment were authentic and so believable. The story had parts that reminded me of my youth and I felt quite emotional at times. I love this one – it’s worth the read.

Excuse me while I disappear – Tales of midlife mayhem – Laurie Notaro
This book was very relatable in parts, and I had a good few laughs, but I only gave it 3 out of 5 on Goodreads. I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling drawn to any books about midlife because they can make us feel seen and heard. And this is a lovely, light read for those of us in midlife.

I’m still here – Black dignity in a world made for whiteness – Austin Channing Brown
I’m so glad I read this book because I learnt so much. Austin Channing Brown has a lovely writing style and beautifully conveyed her life experiences in this “world made for whiteness”. I continue my anti-racism journey to educate myself and find it so valuable to read books that help to change mindsets. I recommend reading this one.

Lucy by the sea – Elizabeth Strout
I love this author and have enjoyed quite a few of her books over the years. Her characters are so real (and sometimes quite unlikeable) and this particular book, set during the Covid lockdown, so perfectly describes the overall feeling during that time. It describes the lives of ordinary people during a traumatic time in an honest and empathetic way. A lovely read.

On reflection
My February reading was a good mix of books – some lighter than others, all thought-provoking, eliciting varying feelings. I enjoyed them all.
