I feel as if winter (and life in general, come to think of it) is dragging along excruciatingly slowly this year. And I don’t suppose I can expect anything else, really – what with things the way they are right now. So I’m over here embracing the slower way of life because what else can I do? (This is me putting on my positive pants! Hah!) And besides, who wants to go out into the cold when you can stay home and snuggle up with Netflix anyway?
But I don’t know about you – we’ve watched so much TV lately, that it almost feels like we’ve watched everything already! Just us? We’ve had to search hard to find something exciting to fill our viewing hours during the past few weeks. (Could this be viewing fatigue?) But we’ve persevered (oh, the hardship), so read on to see what we found. This week’s post has three great TV series suggestions and a few other fun things to fill your time too. I hope you’ll find something that resonates.
My Five Favourites from July
Jumping right in, here are the three shows we’ve watched and particularly enjoyed recently:
High Fidelity, a romantic comedy-drama starring Zoë Kravitz. (Not to be confused with the movie from 2000 starring Jon Cusack.) Both are based on the book by Nick Hornby. The music from this series is seriously good too. I’ve downloaded the official playlist in the hope that some of that cool will rub off on me just a little. Hah.
We also watched the last few seasons of How to get away with murder where I fell even more in love with Viola Davis. What a powerhouse actor! And that finale was jawdropping! I don’t want to give anything away – but if you haven’t watched this series, do it now!
Another one we enjoyed recently was The Woods – a Polish mystery-thriller miniseries based on the novel of the same name by Harlan Coben. This one started off a little slow but just got better and better. Four kids go into the woods one night while at a summer camp and they don’t come out. Only two bodies are found and the intrigue ensues. Dubbed, but done well. Worth a watch.
I’m still crushing candy over here. And the mindlessness of it is keeping me sane, so I’m keeping it for now. Please don’t judge me too harshly.
I’m still working my way through Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad – it’s taking me a while, I know. But it’s opened up my mind and my heart already, and this work takes time.
I also bought Caroline Hirons’s bestseller, Skincare (aff links). And I devoured that book in a day! It’s super informative, a feast for the eyes, and debunks so many skincare myths that are floating around out there. Also, it’s so refreshing to read a book that talks about ageing skin and what a good skincare routine should look like. And it clarifies what you should have in your skincare kit, where you should be spending your money and where you can use cheaper products. Loved this book!
Recently I’ve been enjoying A safe place inside your head (a mental health non-profit that delivers “a daily dose of support”) and Londonxldn (a new account by Londoner, Julianna, who showcases London’s quirkier side).
The podcast, Beauty IQ Uncensored featured an interview with Caroline Hirons (the author of the book I recommended above), so I listened to that. Lots of straight-talking. Good fun.
I’ve also recently discovered another podcast that I think I’m going to listen to a lot – it’s called Postcards from Midlife. I devoured three episodes on the trot – Muffin top begone: eating habits that can change your midlife, To hell and back: Marian Keyes on how to find your midlife joy and The new midlife crisis: are you having one? I’m so excited to have found a podcast with hosts who are fun, intelligent women I can relate to. Listening to this podcast feels like you’re visiting with friends. I highly recommend this one.
Anyway, I hope you find something you enjoy in My Five Favourites today! I’ll be back with the August edition at the end of next month.
And if you’ve got any recommendations or suggestions please share them in the comments section below so that others can enjoy them too.
I hope you’re all well. x
