The 4 books I read in March

Daisy Darker – Alice Feeney

Daisy Darker’s whole family gets together for Nana’s 80th birthday party which takes place at her house on a small tidal island. The house is essentially cut off from the rest of the world for 8 hours when the tide comes in. And every member of this family comes to the party with a long-held secret. Then at the stroke of midnight, Nana is found dead. And an hour later, another member of the family dies. They slowly begin to realize that they’re trapped and someone is killing them off one by one. Ooh, I thoroughly enjoyed this book – it was well thought-out and cleverly written with some very interesting family dynamics thrown in.

Remarkably Bright Creatures – Shelby Van Pelt

This is one of those rare and special books with a beautiful, thought-provoking story and so many great characters. After Tova’s husband dies, she finds herself feeling lost so to help her cope, she takes a job as the night cleaner at a local aquarium. There she strikes up an unlikely friendship with an octopus who cleverly deduces what happened to Tova’s son on the night of his disappearance on a boat thirty years before. But time is running out. Marcellus the octopus must find a way of telling Tova before it’s too late.

Fans of the book A Man Called Ove, will love this book. It’ll definitely stay in my mind and heart for a long time. Highly recommend.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo – Taylor Jenkins Reid

The author of Daisy Jones and the Six also wrote this story about a reclusive Hollywood movie icon who is finally ready to divulge all of her secrets in a tell-all biography. The book is to be written by an unknown writer who has no idea why she’s been selected to do the task.

The story spans Evelyn’s whole life, focusing on the 1950s to the 1980s when she was in Hollywood, and the seven husbands she married during that time. I’d had this book on my Want to Read list for years and I eventually got around to reading it last month. I’d read all the hype about this book when it came out but I never felt the urge to read it back then. And while I enjoyed this one, it wasn’t a huge wow-read for me. The story is certainly intriguing but I didn’t feel pulled in by the characters. In fact, I didn’t like many of them. I know that’s not a necessity, and I actually think this is the great thing about this author’s writing. She writes real characters who haven’t been edited to be fantastic, and always good. I’d say it’s worth a read.

Hello Beautiful – Ann Napolitano

I adored this book. One of the main characters, William Waters grows up in a family that is silenced by tragedy. He is never shown any love throughout his childhood. And only when his basketball skills earn him a scholarship to a university where he meets and falls in love with Julia Padavano does he realize how this has impacted him. She’s one of four sisters who come from a very different family to the one William grew up in. He is quickly welcomed into their loving family but when the sadness of his past surfaces it causes a strain on the Padavano family and has terrible repercussions.

Hello Beautiful is a beautiful story of love, tenderness, family and friendships that had me sobbing at times. I highly recommend this one.
