The festive season is meant to be fun, but let’s be honest – hosting a Christmas party can be stressful. Between juggling gift shopping and daily life, entertaining friends at Christmas can feel overwhelming.
However, with some clever planning, you can throw a fabulous Christmas party that’s a huge hit and light on stress. Here’s how.
A month (or a couple of weeks) before
Choose a date and a theme for your party, and send out your invitations.
It’s not called the silly season for nothing. People’s diaries start filling up in November, so it’s worth getting in early and saving the date with the special friends you’d like to celebrate with at Christmas time.
Taking this first step means completing the hardest part. Now, with a little planning, you’ll be on your way to hosting a fabulous Christmas party.
Pro Tip: Having a theme can bring everything together nicely for a party. A simple theme won’t involve much effort, and your friends will feel involved if you tell them about it in the invitation. (A theme can be used for the dress code and the colours of the table settings.) Some other theme ideas could be – festive sweaters or pyjamas or Christmas-inspired hats or glasses. The emphasis should be on relaxation and fun.

Plan the timing of everything
The next thing I do when hosting a dinner or party is write a list of everything that needs to be done. Then, I plan it out by day and time – what needs to be done a few days out, the day before, the morning of, and an hour before. This list will include shopping, setting the table, prepping the food and organising the drinks table.
Plan the menu
Then, I plan the food and drinks menus. I haul out my recipe books and look for starters (or nibbles), the main meal, side dishes, dessert and one or two speciality drinks. I opt for easy dishes that don’t require too much fiddling, especially as your friends arrive. Having a theme (like Italian, for example) could make this part much easier.
Pro Tip: Opting for things like a grazing board, a one-pot dish like a slow-cooked stew or roast, or even a “bring your own dish” theme could also make things easier for you. This way, you’re not chained to the kitchen, and guests love the interactive vibe.

Do a trial run on the table-setting
This will show you whether you need to buy anything you don’t have, for example, specific coloured candles.
Don’t forget the music
You may want to create a special playlist for the occasion.
Make sure your Christmas decorations are up
Decorate any areas where your guests will be standing or sitting. Remember, it doesn’t have to be elaborate, a few sparkly lights or vases of flowers will suffice.
Decide if you want to play any games at the party
Here are 30 fun adult Christmas party games you could play.
Two days before
Time to shop – buy the food, drinks, flowers and anything else that you don’t have yet.
Clean your home a couple of days before your guests are expected.
Pro Tip: If you can’t make everything yourself, there’s no shame in buying pre-made food or dishes and simply “fancying them up”. Store-bought appetisers and desserts can look almost homemade with a bit of creativity. Arrange them on your own pretty platters and garnish with fresh herbs or powdered sugar for that *homemade* touch.
One day before
I set the table the day before the party, which calms my nerves and makes me feel super organised.
Cook and prepare whatever can be done ahead of time.
I put out the candles I’ll burn to have a pleasant smell in my home on the day (or night).
Do a quick tidy-up.
Pro Tip: Create a self-serve drink station to save yourself the hassle of playing bartender all night. Set up a drinks area with a festive punch, ingredients for your special drinks, wine, or even a hot chocolate bar for dessert. You could even add garnishes like candy canes, marshmallows, and cinnamon sticks for an extra festive touch.
On the day
Clean the guest bathroom on the day.
Set aside at least 30 minutes to freshen up and relax before the party. Put on your favourite holiday tunes, light a candle, and remind yourself that this is about fun, not perfection.
And remember, your friends are there to see *you*, not to judge your decorating skills or culinary prowess. Laughter, connection, and a welcoming vibe are what make a party truly memorable.
Half an hour before the guests arrive
Light the scented candles, open the wine that needs to breathe, put on the music, and check that everything is ready and welcoming when your friends arrive.
