Is it something you would look at doing during midlife? Or maybe you go on girls trips regularly?
I recently went on my very first adult (and midlife) girls trip and I loved it! It wasn’t something that I sought out, but when a girlfriend of mine brought up the idea and got the ball rolling, I signed right up. I mean, who would pass up on a trip to the tropical island of Koh Samui with some fun women? (Um, not me!)
We had an amazing week away together – laughing, playing games (who are we?), getting massages and eating delicious Thai food. Also: taking beach walks, visiting temples, drinking cocktails, and swimming. There’s something to be said for hanging out with your girlfriends in the sun, talking about life and having a laugh. It was so very good for the soul.
We stayed at Villa Manta, a luxury villa in the north-east of the island of Koh Samui in Thailand. And wow, was that place amazing! We each had our own bedroom with en-suite and patio and views out across the ocean. But my favourite spot at the villa was the infinity pool with views to die for. Some of us did water aerobics in the mornings and it was so hot while we were there that we spent a lot of time in that pool throughout the day (and some evenings) too.
Villa Manta
The couple who work at the villa cooked a fabulous breakfast for us every morning. And we often stayed in for dinner too because their meals were so good. If you ever find yourself at this villa, be sure to order the blue crab and the lobster (or any seafood, really) because those dishes were sensational. The tastes and presentation are something to behold!
‘Girl’ Time
I feel very lucky to have spent that week with those lovely women in such a beautiful part of the world. In a society in which you can often feel isolated and lonely, especially during midlife, this time away was a luxurious form of self-care. When you make the effort and go that extra mile (in our case literally), it is so worth it.
But, you don’t have to do it in such a big way – any gathering of your girlfriends would work just as well. Going for coffee or lunch or maybe visiting an art gallery together would be just as beneficial. And you don’t have to know those girlfriends very well – you could use the gathering as a way of reaching out and investing in new friendships.
Two of the three women I went to Koh Samui with are middle-aged and it was lovely to be able to chat about our personal experiences of perimenopause and the various symptoms we’re encountering. Because women are amazing. The youngest of our group listened to our chats (sometimes with wide eyes, haha) but I love that we felt like a little village, helping to normalise our midlife feelings and experiences.

And it’s important to be able to laugh and be silly every now and then too because it increases your happiness levels, that’s for sure. (See the photo below left. On this day we nearly lost one of our party to the Grandmother rock’s private parts! I’ll just leave that there. ;))
Have you been on a ‘girls trip’?
I’d love to hear whether you’ve ever been on a girls trip and what you love about them. Do you make time for your girlfriends regularly?
