The list of books I read in June
The Anthropocene Reviewed – John Green
I learnt so much from this fascinating book. And when I’d finished it, I felt not dissimilar to how I felt after watching the first Superman movie when I was a kid. It made me feel so buoyed that I felt as if I could fly down the escalators at the movie theatre. (Or at least achieve my own greatness). Based on and adapted from John Green’s podcast, this is a collection of essays about diverse topics. Green reviews and rates topics like Halley’s Comet, teddy bears, the Indy500, the QWERTY keyboard and much more. If you haven’t read this book yet, I would highly recommend you do.

We Should All Be Feminists – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
A short read, this book clearly explains what feminism means to (and for) us today. Adapted from a TEDx talk of the same name, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie shows us how we can (or should?) look at feminism – by being aware and choosing inclusion. She incorporates sometimes unbelievable examples of discrimination that she’s experienced in life – to demonstrate how inequality can often be subtle, but still significantly harmful. A great insight into what it means to be a woman today.

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry – Gabrielle Zevin
After his wife’s death and his bookstore sales take a huge nosedive, A.J. Fikry’s rare collection of Poe poems is stolen and everything in his life is looking utterly dismal. But then a mysterious package arrives for him. And his life changes forever. I won’t give anything away, except to say that if you love reading, and a good story, you will adore this book. This is the second Gabrielle Zevin book I’ve read now (she wrote Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow) – and I’m happy to say that I’ve found another author I really enjoy.

The Housemaid – Freida McFadden
I’m not going to lie, this book freaked me out. I’m almost embarrassed to say that I was a little scared to read it at times. I certainly didn’t read it just before going to sleep at night! But I will also admit that it was addictive and I pushed through my fear. This is the story of the Winchester family who hire a housemaid to cook, clean and look after their young daughter. Suffice it to say, things get wild. Nina Winchester makes the housemaid’s life a living hell but she puts up with it for reasons of her own. Without giving anything away, I will say that if you enjoy a thriller, this one is definitely for you. And if you like a series, I see this book is the first of two (so far).

Go as a river – Shelley Read
This is a beautiful book – one of those stories that will stay with me for a long time. It is gorgeously written to evoke a quiet but powerful story about Victoria Nash who lives on her family’s peach farm in Iola, Colorado. She meets Wilson Moon one day in the small ranch town and their strong and unexpected connection changes their lives forever. After tragedy strikes, Victoria has to learn how to survive a new landscape. This is a story of love and loss but also of finding a new home and family.

Someone else’s shoes – Jojo Moyes
This is the story of an epic mixup and making the best of second chances. Nisha Cantor lives a wealthy life until her husband decides to divorce her and cut her off completely. And Sam Kemp’s life is at an all-time low when she accidentally takes Nisha’s gym bag instead of her own when she rushes out of gym one day. I found this a lovely read that highlights some of women’s struggles in life and how these two women coped.
