4 good neck creams for women in their 50s and beyond

Neck creams

A neck cream is an important part of a women’s midlife skincare routine.

For many of us, our neck is a part of our body that can cause concern as we age. Crepey skin and tech neck – I’m looking at you!  If this is you, and you aren’t using a neck cream, you may want to add one to your routine.

But aren’t neck creams a scam?  Couldn’t we simply use the face products we already have?

Most of us have a lot of skincare for our faces – moisturisers, serums, face masks and more, that may well benefit the neck. But our face and neck have unique needs as we age so using the same product for both, will mean that those different needs may not be met.

Firstly, the skin on our neck is thinner than that on our faces. And just like the skin around your eyes, the skin on your neck is sensitive to ageing and environmental factors that accelerate it, like sun exposure. So using any products that contain retinol may be too harsh, causing irritation. Also, the skin on your neck is more elastic and moves around more than the skin on your face. In addition to this, the neck has fewer sebaceous glands which secrete oil, making it more sensitive to dryness. So owing to all of these factors, the skin on your neck is more prone to wrinkling and ageing. And, therefore, needs something a  little different to our face products.

And that’s where specially formulated neck creams come in.

So what’s the difference between face cream and neck cream?

Neck creams are often thicker than facial creams and have ingredients in them to help lift and tighten the neck skin that loses collagen and elastin as we age.

After searching the internet, reading endless reviews, asking facialists and trying a few, here are the ones that seem to do the job.

StriVectin TL Advanced Neck Cream

This face and neck cream contains ceramides, peptides and a (new) lifting complex, that tightens, lifts and firms the skin. The formulation improves the elasticity of the neck and minimises the horizontal fine lines that are known as tech neck. StriVectin’s patented niacinamide NIA-114 technology also strengthens the skin barrier.  Any neck worry – this cream has it covered. Highly rated all over the web. And an added bonus is that it can be used for the face and the neck.

Neostrata Skin Active Triple Firming Neck Cream

This is my hero neck product – I rate it highly. I’ve definitely seen an improvement in my crepiness and lines since using this product. The key ingredient is NeoGlucosamine, a patented component which works to build collagen and stimulate the skin to make more of its own hyaluronic acid. NeoGlucosamine, NeoCitriate and Pro-Amino Acid work together to firm the appearance of sagging skin and target the volumizing matrix. You should start seeing results after a month of use.

My 2 best neck creams for women in their 50s

The Neostrata Triple Firming Neck Cream and the Prai Creme are my favourites right now. And I rate the Neostrata the highest. I do want to try the StriVectin and Emma Hardie ones soon to see how they measure up, though. I  love trying new products to find the ones that actually make a difference. Do you have a favourite neck cream that you think works really well? I’d love to hear about them in the comments below.

One last thing

We now remember to put SPF on our face and body, but often forget about our neck/decolletage area. This is another reason why we tend to see more wrinkles and sun damage there.  So don’t forget to apply your SPF there.
